Artist Statement:

As an Asian American, it’s always been difficult to deal with oppression against myself and my community. Specifically, racism against our backgrounds prevents many people from breaking the stereotypes that have been built around us. Especially in the past year, most Asians would say the racism against them has increased. Many people, including myself, have experienced being scared to go outside their homes or walk on the street because of where they come from.

It is quite clear that Asians can achieve many great things, but this vision can be blocked by the constant stereotypes and racism we face that it’s difficult to break through them. I wanted to incorporate this feeling into my acrylic painting. I hope to show that it is important to focus on the light at the end of the road, which is represented as the bright flower, even if you are surrounded by many obstacles.
